TestDaf is designed specifically for those who want to continue their education in a German-speaking country and tests candidates' language competences in four different parts: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing and speaking. The Reading Comprehension component consists of three texts related to everyday student life, articles as well as various journalistic essays, each of varying degrees of difficulty and 30 questions which the examinee has to solve. The time allowed is 60 minutes. The Listening Comprehension part contains three texts with a total of 25 questions and lasts about 40 minutes. It tests whether candidates can understand spoken German sufficiently well. In the Writing component, examinees are given one writing task, which takes 60 minutes. They must be able to extract data from a graph or table, describe it and finally argue for or against a topic. In the Speaking part, seven problems from different situations of student life at a German university have to be solved within 30 minutes. All of them are of varying degrees of difficulty. The TestDaf is administered at the respective examination centres in the country. All components have the same weighting in the assessment. The scores shown on each individual component are assessed by one of the following grades: TestDaf - Level 3 (TDN 3); TestDaf - Level 4 (TDN 4); TestDaf - Level 5 (TDN 5). TestDaf assessments correspond to levels B2 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. To be admitted to study at a German university, a candidate must be assessed with at least TDN 4 in all parts.
